He resisted the urge to demand what was wrong and pasted a smile to his face. He’d wait until they were actually on the dance floor. He led her to the group of couples dancing and wrapped an arm around her waist and took her hand. They stepped lightly to the music for a little while before he looked her in the eye. “What’s wrong Charolette? It’s prom. Why do you look like you’re at…” Bad choice of words, so he let it trail off and looked away for a second. Then, with the face he wore when he was scolding Kebi, he turned back to face her.”Where’s Lottie?”
She danced lightly around the floor looking at the other people around the room before she looked back at Al, who was uncomfortably gazing at her. Like she had done something wrong. “I’m here,” she replied quietly. But Lottie knew what he had meant, but she wasn’t exactly sure herself. But deep down she did know, she just didn’t want to talk about it here.
“Lottie…” He wanted to insist, but this was not the place to argue. He sighed in irritation and spun her around, using the moment to glance around the room. Nobody was paying any attention to them so he guided her towards an archway as they danced. When they were close enough, he pulled her into what looked to be a deserted hall. “You have to tell me what’s going on, because i’m not exactly smart enough to find out on my own. I know I checked out on you a while ago, and i’m sorry, but i’m not going to let you do the same thing to me.” His words were quick and quiet, coming out as more of a hiss since he was trying not to sound too angry. “Lottie, I wanna help you. But you have to let me.”
Lottie was confused as to where they were going when she noticed that he led them out to the hallway. She wanted to detest and ask what was going on, but listened to him intently, biting her lip as she did. Lottie could feel herself being scared. “I don’t know what you can do. I don’t even know what I’m doin’ to be honest. I jus’ feel so lost, Al. I don’t wanna be sad…” She let her words trail off as she spoke, her voice getting quieter with each word.
Allen felt a sense of relief flood over him. His initial worry was that someone had hurt Lottie. And that would not be accepted. But now he realized it was the demons inside her, and he knew what kind of a struggle that could be. “Lot, it’s okay. Why do you insist on no being sad? It’s healthy to be. This…” He gestured at her. “This is not healthy. And I want you in perfect condition.” He ran his hands through his hair and frowned. “Tell me what I can do. I’ll do anything, just tell me. I promise.”
“I jus’ don’t wanna be sad, Al. I don’t wanna fall apart…I can’t…” ‘Cause there’s no one there to put me back together, she continued in thought. She crossed her arms and looked over to her side before she let out a sigh. “I am in perfect condition… I jus’ got a few bumps and bruises.” Lottie shook her head at his request, and looked back at him, even though she didn’t want to. She always felt like she was helpless and needed to rely on him when he gave her that look. “There’s nothin’, Al. Absolutely nothin’. You’ve already done a bunch of things for me. There’s really nothin’.”

Allen knew he was extremely late, and he was going to have to leave pretty soon as well. Kebi had some how gotten a hold of some peach yogurt and was suffering from an allergic reaction. But now that she was resting, he had used the chance to sneak over to prom and see how it was going. Most of all, he wanted to talk to Lottie. He had known that she had gone alone and he couldn’t stand the thought of her just sitting by herself in worry. He spotted her at a table and, like he thought, alone. “Now what is someone as beautiful as you doing over here all by your lonesome?” He took her hand and kissed it politely.
“Admirin’ the view,” she shrugged. Lottie watched him take her hand and she let him kiss it politely, but only for a brief second before she took the hand he had kissed and motioned to Ron and Kim. ”I came with Kim, but I didn’t wanna keep her all to myself. That wouldn’t of been very fair of me. So, how’re you? You look all spiffy in the suit.” She really wasn’t in the mood to talk about herself. Not much and tonight, anyway.
Allen squinted at her as she slipped her hand away. She had done it gently so he wouldn’t have his feelings hurt, but he couldn’t help but feel a bit worried. She didn’t look very happy. “Oh i’m fine. Kebi could be better, but she’s healing alright.” Over the general chatter from the crowd he heard the song The Scientist by Coldplay come on. He gave her a pointed look and extended his arm. “You have to dance with me before I run off again. You have to. It’s a rule.”
Lottie narrowed her eyebrows at the mention of Kebi. “Healing? What’ddya mean? What’s wrong?” She could feel herself start to talk faster, something that she had always done when she was upset or anxious, but lately it just seemed to come out more. Managing to take a deep breath, she was able to calm herself down well enough to make herself not seem as worried and distraught. Lottie looked down at the floor and fiddled with her phone as she sighed and looked up at him from her chair. “Alright, jus’ one.”
